TYPES OF SOD

There are many options in choosing the appropriate sod for your lawn. Depending on your needs and wants- each type of grass offers various benefits that might appeal to you. Overall choosing sod has the benefit of arriving at your home and instantly transforming your yard into a beautiful lawn without waiting for grass seed to grow. We get our sod delivered from a farm we trust, with roots and soil still intact. The following are some of the most popular options:

Bermuda Grass

Going with Bermuda Grass is an excellent choice for the warm climate here in West Texas. The grass is wear-resistant, drought-tolerant and its rapid growth helps it be more resistant to invading weeds. Not to mention this does well if you’re going to spend a lot of time enjoying your lawn (meaning it doesn’t go flat or go yellow).

Fescue

One trait that makes fescue a desirable lawn option is its adaptability to a wide range of climates as well as being tolerant to cold, heat, and drought. Unlike Bermuda grass, Fescue grass does well in shade making this versatile lawn an option.

St. Augustine

St. Augustine grass loves moist, sunny locations and warm climates meaning you’ll find this grass a lot in the south. Its root grows rapidly and attaches to your lawn easily so you’re not having to stress on the adjustment process. As it reaches maturity this grass gets a thick, coarse texture, grows densely, and gets a deep green. One thing to keep in mind is that

St. Augustine grass requires more maintenance than other grasses. Unlike Bermuda grass, St. Augustine grass doesn’t like dry or drought conditions.

TYPES OF TREES

(from 3” Caliper to 10” Caliper)

Adding mature trees to your yard can bring shade and beauty to your residence. So when choosing from the different types of trees that are best for your yard, take into consideration the following; begin by looking for trees that do well with the climate in your area. Are you adding trees because you’d like some added shade? Do you want a tree valued for its beauty in spring or throughout the winter? Would you want your tree to provide you with fruit, nuts or citrus? Some trees can help with privacy, is that a factor? Also, consider the wildlife having a tree might attract. There are various factors in choosing a tree and we can help you with the process.

There also several added benefits for having trees in on your property. Keep in mind that trees provide shade and help cool our homes. This alone can help with energy costs. Not to mention adding trees is one of the most sustainable ways to make your home more welcoming all the while adding property value and curb appeal.

Elms

A majestic tree to include in your garden is the elm. Adding elm trees can provide your yard with beauty and far-reaching shade. They have a shallow root system that makes it difficult to grow anything under them, they make up for this with their natural beauty and the amount of their shade makes it worth going without a garden underneath.  These deciduous trees usually have a unique trunk with a shedding bark that leaves an ornamental, puzzle-like pattern on it.

Oak

The Oak tree is one of the most beloved trees in America and an excellent choice for your property. As part of your yard, an oak tree can make for a great shade tree as it’s a generally large tree. These trees have been documented to live for up to 200 years as they can adapt to most soil conditions and generally enjoy full sun.

Crepe or Crape myrtles

If you're thinking of adding one or more crepe myrtles to your landscape our consultants can help you with this decision. Crepe myrtles have a variety of landscape uses- when planted together they can provide a sustainable privacy fence. A single tree can create a distinctive focal welcoming point but several in sequence can flank a walkway very elegantly. There’s a reason that crepe myrtles have become wildly popular in the south. Overall, they’re quite simple to grow and very rewarding with color and shade and are drought-resistant.  If you are considering adding a crepe myrtle to your landscape, it is important to understand how to make a good buying decision. Be sure when selecting a tree to choose the right sized one. For example, the larger types need room to grow.

Palms

No tree brings to mind the topics faster than a Palm, these popular exotic plants are often seen in every living space, both inside and outside. In our climate, these evergreen trees can successfully grow outdoors all year-round. Like most trees, there are some things to consider including the height of the palm, size of your property, the location in your garden, soil conditions, and any leaf or fruit drop. Our consultants can walk you through all aspects of developing a palm garden.

Pistachios

This beautiful, medium-sized tree is perfect for both the home garden and the urban landscape. For starters, pistachios are extremely tough trees that transplant easily and tolerate a wide range of conditions from frequently a variety of soils to droughts. They’re virtually pest and disease-free. Pistachios tolerate light shade but do best in full sun and love the heat. One thing to keep in mind is that in their youth they require proper pruning to create a symmetrical tree with good form.

Mesquite

Mesquite is more than just wood for bbq, the tree is actually quite drought resistant and makes for an attractive addition to your xeriscape garden. This medium-sized tree thrives in dry conditions and grows well in full sun or partial shade. The heat-loving tree will thrive within most soils with good drainage and it has a unique ability to harvest moisture from even the driest soils due to its root system. If you’re looking for a hardy tree with ample shade for your new xeriscape landscape.

Redbuds

Redbuds are a lovely option especially if placed where they can be seen from all different angles. Because of their modest size redbuds they don’t interfere with power lines and can fit into small spaces, and are generally low-maintenance. The tree adapts to a variety of conditions and thrives in most types of soil but it does better when grown in a moist, well-drained location.  While it grows well in full sun, redbuds prefer shade in the heat of summer. The tree can put up with summer dry spells but it is better to keep watering them.
